I've never been one to make resolutions -- waking up on 1 January and deciding to change my life entirely (lose weight, go to the gym, save money, etc) -- that's totally crazy. Yet people do it all the time. I work at a fitness center and can attest to the fact that membership swells in January.....then falls back to normal in February (or the first snow storm).

The idea of before and after implies that something's wrong (before) that can be fixed (after). But rather than thinking in stark before/after images -- why not just think of one's life as a continual evolution and path to self improvement? And rather than focus on how one looks, maybe focus on being healthy (eat right and regular exercise), giving (volunteer anyone?), learning, and people?

My own goals for the year are varied. But I do want to sew more. Specifically the following.

Ginger Jeans
Cascade Duffle Coat
Dress (Washington?)
All purpose tops (Lark Tee?)
Exercise Tops
Exercise Bottoms
Lingerie
Cargo-style Capris

These all seem to fit in with my lifestyle.bmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01378630898176323133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8823465250304785611.post-38748824504765364592015-11-17T16:38:00.001-05:002015-11-17T16:38:29.553-05:00Finally - Some Finished ProjectsI've been sewing quite a bit lately. Very slowly because I'm a bit of a perfectionist and fitting is always a bit of a challenge. I finished five items recently: 3 versions of the Grainline Studio's Scout Tee, Cashmerette's Appleton Dress, and Grainline Studio's Hemlock.

I'll blog more about each separately, but I wanted to leave you with this closeup of the Hemlock's neck/binding. I finally got something that looks remotely professional. Sewing knits has been a real challenge for me.
But it takes time. A lot of time. And getting things to fit is somewhere between an art and a science.

And sometimes things just don't work out. I tried to make a dress using a pattern similar to a ready to wear dress I wear frequently (Pattern). I actually made two muslins to test the fit before cutting the dress out of the fashion fabric (that's a whole nother subject). But it didn't help. The chosen fabric was just too stretchy and the weight of all that fabric stretched the armholes half way to my waist. There was nothing to do but cut it up and find a more suitable use for the fabric. The rest was wadded up and thrown into the trash. The technical term for such a project is a "wadder. "
My mother passed away and we're just now getting into a "new normal" rhythm. Our community garden plot continued on, flowers and weeds wait for no one.
They add color to an otherwise mostly green plot. And they are beautiful to look at while weeding on a hot humid summer day.

This year we decided to do something different and got a package of mixed seeds - Fairy Meadow from Botanical Interests. Not thinking things through, we didn't realize how difficult it'd be to tell the flowers from the weeds.....so I'm sure we've weeded out a bunch of flowers and that we're now cultivating and watering a bunch of flowering weeds. Oh well.

As the flowers are blooming we're trying to identify them using the list on the package.....some are easy, others not so much so.

I saw two patterns that looked like they'd fit into my mostly casual wardrobe -- by a company I'd never heard of - Jalie. So I ordered two and made one of each as a trial to check the sizing and see if I could use the cover stitch on my (older model) serger.

First was a dolman sleeved knit top (Jalie 3352) -- using some fabric I had on hand. I cut what I thought would be a good size -- with sleeves -- and used a twin needles for hemming. It's cute -- and looks like the pictures. But it's really too big (especially in the shoulder/underarm area), too long (by 2-3 inches), and the doubleneedle just didn't provide sufficient stretch. It's wearable -- as an oversized top. But I'm going to try again with a sleeveless version and adjust the size/length.

Next up was a racerback tank (Jalie 3245) -- again using fabric I had on hand. I cut the same size as the dolman sleeved top -- and had to cut off one inch at each size at the underarm-- for a total of 4 inches (I have to admit that I just serged the excess off - blending into the original seam line a few inches down). This time I used my coverstitch and it worked out fairly well. I couldn't stitch over serged seams neatly -- but the stitching looked great on the flat hems, around the arms and neckline. And after reading a few tips online for starting and ending each seam -- the results really look professional.

I didn't use any binding, but simply stitched the hems down.
The outer fabric and visor lining were cut from a single fat quarter, the rest from leftovers. Instead of making the pleat after sewing the bonnet, I added a quarter inch pleat in both shell and lining during construction. It cut down on the bulk. These are just so cute. I need to make one in the other three sizes -- I'll have a set of five.

Today we played Tom Sawyer -- painting boards in preparation for fence repairs at the community garden. There are always so many things to be done at the garden. Weeding, trimming, etc. A never ending to-do list.

And I bought myself a present -- a 100 percent wool Zwartbles travel blanket (shepherded by the one and only cat shepherd Bodacious) - direct from Ireland. It's so dense and soft....I'm looking forward to the cooler weather when I can really use it.
I need some new tops and pants. But I wanted to start small. And what could be much smaller than a baby bonnet?

I saw this blog post -- and how could I resist (ignoring the fact that I really don't know any babies.....but that's a mere detail)? The pattern is here.

For my prototype I used stash cotton and made the 3-6 month size. I pressed all the seams in opposite directions (outer shell one way, lining the other) and top stitched all around. There's a lot of bulk where the folds go....so those are a bit bigger than 1/4 inch.

For the next iteration, I'll cut the center hat on the crosswise grain to give it a little stretch to better ease the side pieces in. I also found that using a piece of paper made topstitching the ties a lot easier....and it just pulled right off.

But all in all.....it's really cute.

But I might finally be there.

We'd moved the bird feeders to a tree on our patio for better bird-watching....but they were trashing the tree and patio. So we moved them to a slightly different, but still visible spot. And started to vac the patio. Yes, it looks ridiculous to vacuum the patio, but we needed to clean up all the discarded seeds and empty hulls tossed around. Just a bit of daily maintenance, including washing out the bird bath, makes all the difference.

I can't get a good picture, but a rose-breasted grosbeak has arrived on scene. Very handsome. And while it was exciting to see a big hawk -- the fact that he caught a dove was rather unpleasant -- especially cleaning up all the feathers left behind.

And I found a sweater pattern that just spoke to me. It's Auster from the latest edition of the Twist Collective. I'm converting it to a vest because I don't like heavy sleeves. It's not often that I see something and want to make it immediately.
Yes, I'm knitting it on straight needles. I don't understand the disdain that's shown to people who use straight versus circular needles. It's as if we're some sort of lesser knitters. People -- get over yourselves. There are real problems in this world -- and that's not one of them.bmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01378630898176323133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8823465250304785611.post-57486582686216740012015-04-17T07:43:00.003-04:002015-04-17T07:43:29.234-04:00Signs that It's Really SpringWe've definitely turned the corner to spring. February brought snow storm after snow storm and temperatures well below average. It seemed like we had to snow blow and shovel daily. The snow on the roof got deeper and deeper, then needed to be shoveled off to reduce the weight.

View from the Roof

Interestingly enough, it wasn't really scary up on the roof.....there was so much snow that my legs were buried almost up to my knees -- so sliding off wasn't a possibility.

On some roof surfaces, snow turned to ice, which in turn melted and dripped into the house. For weeks we had strategically placed buckets and towels to catch the indoor rain. Water coming in around the front door caused it to freeze shut, making it unusable for a month.

I follow blogs from England, Ireland, Washington state, and Oregon. All were filled with pictures of green grass and spring flowers. While we were stuck in a world of dirty white.

Well, it's mid-March and the snow is still there. But it's melting. The roof is almost clear of snow and ice. The wreath that hung so festively on the door in December and then fell into a snowbank is almost un-buried. I can see the top of the birdbath. And we got the front door opened.

Unfortunately, we're seeing a lot of damage too. Some fence rails have broken off. Shrubs are bent and broken and will need serious pruning. Walls and ceilings need repair and re-painting. We need to figure out why ice forms in one particular area on the roof.

One thing we have enjoyed this winter -- our bird feeder. We've seen so many birds flitting around, eagerly gobbling down the seed and the suet.

There's still a lot of snow....but the air smells like spring.bmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01378630898176323133noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8823465250304785611.post-77792875315105844272015-02-10T08:28:00.001-05:002015-02-10T08:28:20.952-05:00Snow, Snow, SnowIt's been unbelievably snowy. The pile at our front door is way over my head.

So why haven't I gotten more done craft-wise? Oh, maybe because I keep
ripping it out. 9 inches of my sweater gone. Funny how it's faster to
rip than to knit. After reworking several inches of cable two times, I decided that the cable had to go.....bmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01378630898176323133noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8823465250304785611.post-21133430731413995672015-01-12T18:55:00.002-05:002015-01-12T18:55:19.161-05:00Mystery VisitorWe were taking the outside decorations down when we noticed a strange disturbance under a tree and some very unusual paw prints leading to/from. It seems like I've spent more time ripping out projects than making actual progress. But I think I found a vest that might actually work. Swatching is underway.
I wore my sample at the New England Fiber Festival and was quite happy with how it turned out.

So I moved on to a hat/cowl/mitt set. The prototypes are done so I started knitting samples in a soft merino/alpaca blend is a warm rose color (the color is much rosier in person).
Forget Black Friday shopping and crazed consumerism and join the handcrafted movement. October is also a great month to sit in the window, watching the great outdoors. Not too hot, not too cold.

Although the calendar says it's just fall, a unusually early killing frost this year made it seem like fall a while ago. The strange part was that the frost hit only our community garden plot -- all the flowers and veggies near the house are still thriving.
That is, when I'm not over at the garden.

I have to laugh when I see patterns titled "easy." Or "make it today, wear it tomorrow." Right. I think I spend more time pinning, basting, and ripping than actually sewing. And making muslin after muslin.

That was certainly the case with this top. Butterick B5503. I've had the pattern for a while and thought it would be somewhat business like -- so more suitable for doing volunteer work than working in the yard.

My first muslin was generously sized, to say the least. Baggy, with too much ease. And too long between the shoulders and underarm....so much so that the arm opening extended half way to my waist. So I ended up cutting a smaller size and shortened the pieces by approximately one inch between the shoulders and bottom of the armhole (took some finagling to accommodate the curved yoke). The fit could use more tweaking, but it's now wearable.

The only other change I made was to eliminate the facing and bind the neck edge with contrasting fabric.

Note that there are no tucks - those are just wrinkles ironed in. Woops.
And I've added so many sewing related blogs to my feed for further inspiration.

Yesterday I finished a new summer cotton top using New Look 6871, view D in the shorter length using just a single fabric. This was the second time I've used this pattern.

Fabric: Very old fabric from my stash of unknown origin - a quilting cotton. It was quite faded at the fold lines, so I had to seam the fronts and backs to hide that. And there wasn't quite enough fabric, so I pieced and seamed the facings and used a contrasting fabric for the bias armhole bindings.

Size: 14 for the yoke, 16 for the body starting at the underarm.

Construction changes: Instead of gathers on the front/back, I used gentle pleats -- 4 on the front, 6 on the back. No interfacing. I used this tutorial for the armhole bindings.

What would I do differently next time? 1) Cut a size 14 at the underarm, grading to a 16 at the hem. 2) Use a lighter weight fabric and/or lighter weight facing fabric (both yoke and armhole). Otherwise it's quite cool and comfortable for a hot summer day.
I'd seen some of this collection at quilt shows, but it was so interesting to see it in a museum setting with informational plaques. Color selection and use has to be one of the hardest parts of quilt making.

While I love to look at all the different styles, my favorites are always the pieced quilts - especially the various types of Irish Chains. Non-flash photos were allowed, so I snapped a couple cell phone pictures.

Here's a quilt I might actually make....in different colors (according to what I read, I'm not the only one who's not an orange fan).

And this one was interesting for its optical illusion effect (with a close up for one individual block).

And while nothing could ever convince me to attempt hand-piecing a bazillion hexagons, I loved the various geometric shapes formed just through the use of color. And using that as covering for the elevators was really fun (I should have gone closer to see just how they did that).
Finally, no trip to the MFA is complete without seeing the gigantic Chihuly glass tower in the Shapiro family courtyard.
Where do I stand?

My dress is finished. And here's my sweater.

Yes, I frogged it completely. The yarn just wasn't right for this sweater. So we're working on plan B. I really need to pick up the pace.bmomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01378630898176323133noreply@blogger.com0
