My thought that a stand would help my weaving was confirmed by Michelle. And since I was going to the MA Sheep and Wool Festival last weekend, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to make a slight detour (less than 1/2 mile) to pick up a stand at Webs. [FYI - in store pickup is a great service.]
The stand was simple to assemble, so by Sunday I had it all set up and warped, ready for my first practice piece. Needless to say, my first attempt left a lot to be desired (but it wasn't nearly as bad as my first spinning attempt!). As my confidence increased, I played with the gauge a bit, beating the weft more densely and trying different stitch patterns (hmmmm, I think I need to work on the lingo) - so some of the variation seen was actually on purpose. I even tried a finished edge (which I do like the look of). Now I have to figure out how to get a consistently nice selvedge. And then I can really start using up a lot of my yarn....
