I'd heard so much about Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby Surprise Jacket that I decided to make one using the "instructions" in her Knitting Workshop book. [Her instructions are notoriously cryptic.]
It really was fast and fun to make. The color changes resulted in a lot of finishing work to weave in the ends -- so the actual knit time was less than the finishing time (note to self - next time, fewer color changes). Knit from about 5 skeins of Mission Falls 1824 Wool, it's quite heavy; definitely more a jacket than sweater.
The magic of the jacket is that it's knit in one piece, with seaming required only at the shoulders. Here's the piece after knitting. Then the final jacket sewn and buttoned. Pretty cool.
Too bad I don't have anyone to give it to right now. [B-Dad has actually commented that I appear to make things for the sole purpose of having blog fodder....] I'm sure someone will have a baby soon.
